Georgia CDL Practice Test 2026: DDS Fees, CAP & Skills Test

Official sources verified

Georgia freight moves through the Port of Savannah, metro Atlanta, I-75, I-85, and I-20. The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) issues commercial learner permits and CDLs.

The previous page misleadingly called the modernized test a simplified inspection and claimed older material would automatically cause failure. Georgia completed its statewide transition in June 2026, but applicants still must pass vehicle inspection, basic control skills, and the road test.

Georgia CDL Application Steps

  1. Define the class and endorsements. Match the credential to the actual vehicle and work.
  2. Check eligibility and identity documents. Bring the original or certified documents DDS requires.
  3. Self-certify the type of commerce. Submit valid medical certification when the selected category requires it.
  4. Submit the $35 Commercial Application. DDS says a new CAP and fee are due after the fourth failure or after the application window expires.
  5. Pay the $10 permit fee and pass the knowledge tests. If the applicant fails, DDS retains that fee as a testing fee and another fee is due for the next attempt.
  6. Receive and inspect the CLP. Confirm class, endorsements, restrictions, and expiration.
  7. Complete ELDT if covered. Use an FMCSA-registered provider.
  8. Hold the CLP for at least 14 days and practice under supervision. Train in the vehicle configuration needed for the final CDL.
  9. Schedule the skills test and pay the $50 fee. Bring the required registration, insurance, medical record, and safe test vehicle.
  10. Pass all three skills sections and purchase the CDL. Verify the issued credential before leaving.

What Georgia’s Modernized Skills Test Means

Georgia DDS announced statewide adoption of the modernized test in June 2026. The examination still has three required parts: vehicle inspection, basic control skills, and road test. Do not rely on claims that the inspection is simply shorter or that one unofficial maneuver list applies everywhere. Study the current Georgia manual and DDS materials.

The format changed, but the candidate must still demonstrate inspection knowledge, vehicle control, and safe road driving.

2. Georgia DDS Fees & Documents (2026)

Georgia offers an 8-year license, which is a great value. However, you must pay separate fees for the application and the test.

ServiceCostDetails
Commercial Application (CAP)$35.00Covers four test attempts within the DDS application window.
Commercial Learner Permit$10.00AP/BP permits valid 365 days; retained as a test fee after failure.

Georgia CLP and Skills-Test Checklist

A CLP holder may drive only with an appropriately licensed CDL holder and the endorsements needed for the vehicle. The permit does not authorize solo commercial driving. Before the skills appointment, verify the 14-day hold, ELDT record, medical status, vehicle registration and insurance, vehicle class, safety condition, and the site’s cancellation policy.
